About Us
Moon Angel is on a social mission to bring Brazilian culture to people around the world while providing dignified employment opportunities to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, we specialize in producing traditional Brazilian-style chocolate truffles, known as brigadeiros. In addition, we import original art and artisanal products, from paintings and sculpture to embroideries and handicrafts. Our founder, Daniela Leite Waterhouse, grew up on the beautiful coast of Northeastern Brazil, in the city of João Pessoa. She owned a specialty clothing boutique while putting herself through law school, worked as a lawyer in Brazil for several years, and then studied international law for five years in Paris, France. Since 2003, she has called America home. With Moon Angel, she combines her passion for Brazilian culture with a mission to develop a socially conscious, community-oriented enterprise. Brigadeiros, from the Portuguese word for “brigadier,” have been Brazil’s most popular sweet for generations. It all started in the 1940s during the presidential campaign of Army Brigadier Eduardo Gomes, whose supporters brought these tasty treats to his campaign events. He loved them so much that people started calling them “doces do brigadeiro”–the “Brigadier’s sweets”–which was eventually just shortened to “brigadeiro.” Gomes lost the election, but the sweets lived on and became a staple of Brazilian parties and events.
