“Brigadeiro” is the Portuguese word for “brigadier.” According to the legend, these tasty treats go back to the presidential campaign of Army Brigadier Eduardo Gomes in 1945. One of his supporters in Rio de Janeiro, the confectioner Heloisa Nabuco de Oliveira, invented the little morsels and named them in honor of her candidate. Although Gomes did not win the election, brigadeiros quickly became a staple at Brazilian parties and events.
